Comparative Evaluation of the Municipal and the Consortium Models in German Basic Social Assistance: The object of the evaluation was to determine which model provides better services to needy job-seekers in Germany: local administrations or consortiums from the Public Employment Service and local administrations. The results, obtained in cooperation with several other institutes, show that the Consortium model is more successful in shortening periods of benefit receipt and integrating job-seekers into work. By contrast, the Municipal model is better with respect to several measures of long-term employability. [ more ]
Financial crisis. With the effects of the global financial crisis becoming more and more strainful, it is of great public interest to be able to quantify the amount of risks in the banking sector and understand their causes and effects. In a current project, IAW researchers investigate the determinants of banking risks. Three papers [link zu den Papers] have appeared to date. The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) and conducted jointly with the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the University of Tübingen.

IAW participates in new EU-funded project EFIGE. Since October 2008, the IAW takes part in an international cooperation project on European Firms in a Global Economy: Internal Policies for External Competitiveness (EFIGE). The project is funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union for four years and conducted jointly with research institutions such as the Center for European Policy Research (CEPR), the Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et des Informations Internationales (CEPII) and other partners from the UK, Italy, Hungary, Sweden and Spain. IAW Short Report 2/2008 released: The shortage of skilled workers affects small and medium-size enterprises even more than large companies. At the same time, smaller enterprises are among those most eager to create new positions for highly qualified workers. The IAW Short Report finds that a large part of the current shortage of skilled workers is due to companies' changed qualification requirements. [PDF: 876 KB]
IAW researchers participate in important international conferences. Several research papers by IAW research associates were presented at major international conferences taking place from July to November 2008, among them the Conference of the European Economic Association (EEA), the Econometric Society European Meeting (ESEM), the European Association of Labour Economists (EALE) and the European Trade Study Group.
Prof. Dr. Claudia M. Buch (Scientific Director of the IAW/University of Tübingen) was appointed chairperson of the scientific advisory board to the German Ministry of Economics (2008-2010).
