Bernhard Boockmann joined the IAW as managing director in November 2007. He studied economics and philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim and economics at University College London. Bernhard Boockmann received his Ph.D. in 1998 and the post-doctoral habilitation in 2004. From 1998 to 2007 he was a researcher at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim. Since 2002, he was also vice head of department, labour economics, personnel management and social security, at the ZEW.

His research centres on labour market issue such as treatment effects of labour market policies, the analysis of individual work histories, labour market regulations and wage determination. Other fields of his research are the economic analysis of political decision-making and the policies of international organisations.

Bernhard Boockmann coordinated several large-scale projects on labour market policies commissioned by different bodies and sponsors. He is a member of the standing committee on social policy of the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik), has been a referee for about 20 academic journals and teaches at the Universities of Mannheim and Tübingen.
