Dr. Julia Spies

Julia Spies was from February 2008 to December 2011 as a research associate at the IAW. Between 1999 and 2004 she studied economic sciences with a focus on International Economics at the Universities of Hohenheim and Fribourg (Switzerland). After completing her PhD thesis on various aspects of international trade and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2009, she visited Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) as a post-doc research fellow. At both institutes, she has contributed with her research on the cross-border activities of multinational firms to several EU projects (MicroDyn, INGINEUS and EFIGE). Since 2009, she has also been coordinating projects on international topics. Her research in the field of trade and FDI has been published in various peer reviewed journals, amongst others, in Regional Science and Urban Economics.

Research interests: Multinational firms, international trade, microeconometrics

Dr. Julia Spies left the IAW and joined the ITC - International Trade Centre UNCTAD-WTO at Geneva.

  • Europe’s Global Linkages and the Impact of the Financial Crisis: Policies for Sustainable Trade, Capital Flows, and Migration. Commissioned by: Volkswagen Foundation (2011-2014).
  • Trade in tasks – potentials for internationalisation and their effects on the wage structure and composition of employment. Commissioned by: German Research Foundation (DFG) (2011-2013).
