Julia Spies joined the IAW as a research associate in February 2008. Between 1999 and 2004 she studied economic sciences with a focus on International Economics at the Universities of Hohenheim and Fribourg (Switzerland). After completing her PhD thesis on various aspects of international trade and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2009, she visited Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) as a post-doc research fellow. At both institutes, she has contributed with her research on the cross-border activities of multinational firms to several EU projects (MicroDyn, INGINEUS and EFIGE). Since 2009, she has also been coordinating projects on international topics. Her research in the field of trade and FDI has been published in various peer reviewed journals, amongst others, in Regional Science and Urban Economics.
Research interests: Multinational firms, international trade, microeconometrics

- European Firms in a Global Economy: Internal Policies for External Competitiveness (EFIGE). Commissioned by: EU Commission/7th RFP (2008-2012).
- Foreign Direct Investment in Services. Commissioned by: German Research Foundation (DFG) (2008-2010).
- Integrated project MICRO-DYN: Growth, employment and competitiveness in the knowledge-based European economy. Commissioned by the European Commission (2006/2010).
