Francesco Giavazzi is Professor of Economics at Bocconi University, Milan, and Regular Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was the Director General of the Italian Treasury responsible for debt management and privatizations from 1992 to 1994, and a member of the Council of Economic Advisers to the Italian prime minister from 1998 to 2000. He has published extensively on macroeconomic policy issues in major academic journals, and has co-authored two widely acclaimed books published by MIT Press: “Limiting Exchange-Rate Flexibility: The European Monetary System” (with Alberto Giovannini) and ” The Future of Europe: Reform or Decline” (with Alberto Alesina). He is the co-author of a best-selling textbook “Macroeconomics: A European Perspective” (with Alessia Amighini and Olivier Blanchard). His most recent academic writings have concentrated on austerity policies in the context of the European sovereign debt crisis.
